Sadako and The Thousand Paper Cranes, 1990

The statue by Daryl Smith pays tribute to a young Japanese girl who died of leukemia caused by exposure to radiation left by devastating effects of the Atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan by the United States of America during WWII.

During her fight against cancer, she was encouraged to make 1000 origami paper cranes. She is revered as a heroine in Japan and is celebrated annually on August 6th as the symbol of Peace Day.

NOTES

8/28/2018 – Apparently, this statue has been severely vandalized over the years. The images taken in August 2018 reveal a makeshift broom that was tied to the hand of the statue. I wasn’t able to find any significance of this accessory to the art piece.
